The pink-colored petals of the cherry trees fell slowly onto the soft dirt. Two students stood underneath the dark, large branches of the tree. No one would expect to see either of them together, yet they stood in front of each other in the shade of the Sakura tree, engulfed in a silence that neither of them seemed to have the courage to break.
“So, what did you call me here for?” The boy’s voice suddenly broke the awkward silence.
Hesitantly, the girl began to speak. “There’s something that I wanted to let you know before you leave.”
Without any words, the boy urged her to continue.
“I love you.” The words were whispered out of the girl’s mouth.
Despite these words, the male didn’t seem fazed whatsoever. Instead, he only chuckled lightly before answering. “That’s pretty stupid.”
There was it again, a silence that felt like rejection. It was almost as if the silence itself was able to speak.
“Would you like to go on a date with me?”
“Why would you even like someone like me when you’re all up high in the school? Everyone wants you, but you choose to like me. Why me?” His voice was quiet.
She fished a folded white piece of paper before handing it to the boy. “Because you’re perfect in every way. You’re much better than everyone else that I see.”
As the girl fled, he opened the note.
‘I truly like you and wanted to tell you before it was too late. I hope that you take my confession into consideration, if you do choose to accept it, we should meet at the café. Here’s my number: xxx-xxx-xxxx.’
The male couldn’t help but smile. He felt as if he had just won the lottery ten times over. It made him want to go home and persuade his parents to let him stay behind as they traveled.
