Army General suspended for mocking Jill Biden on Twitter

By: Austin Fang

This July, Army Lieutenant General Gary Volesky was suspended from the US army. This came after the 60-year-old mocked Jill Biden after a tweet she made in June concerning the overturning of Roe V. Wade.

“For nearly 50 years, women have had the right to make our own decisions about our bodies. Today, that right was stolen from us,” Biden posted on June 24, 2022. “And while we may be devastated by this injustice, we will not be silent. We will not sit back as the progress we have already won slips away.”

“Glad to see you finally know what a woman is,” Volesky wrote in his reply, which has now been deleted according to USA Today.

This isn’t the only political tweet posted by Volesky, he has posted many more, including a reply posted in July 2021 to a tweet posted by Rep. Liz Cheney saying that she would serve in the committee investigating the January 6 attacks. Cheney wrote, “Our oath to the Constitution must be above partisan politics.”

Volesky replied, “This is all about partisan politics.”

Volesky has had a long military career. He led Joint Base Lewis-McChord from 2017 to 2020, commanded the Airborne 101 Division (2014-2017), and was the chief of the army’s Public Affairs division before he retired and became a mentor. His accomplishments have made him a respected member of the US army.

He was even awarded a Silver Star, which was the 3rd highest military combat honor, for how he fought in northeastern Baghdad. He has served in a long list of wars. According to a Washington Post article, he has fought in the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan.

Volesky isn’t the only army veteran sending political messages on social media. Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, in 2016, said Hillary Clinton ought to be locked up, as he later got fired from being president Donald Trump’s security advisor for lying to federal investigators.
